Shuffle

I never use the shuffle function when I listen to music on my phone. I always find I skip half the songs and listen to something I probably would have chosen anyway.

When I was in the office this morning doing paperwork for the first hour and a half I thought I’d give it a shot. I guess I was hoping something would come on that would inspire me or speak to me or give me a sign or something.

Here’s what came up:

‘Till Your Fool Comes Home – James Hunter

Hourglass – Squeeze

Profoundly in Love with Pandora – Ian Dury

For Your Lover Give Some Time – Richard Hawley

Set Me Free – The Kinks

I Shall be Released – Bob Dylan

Yesterday Is Here – Southside Johnny & LaBamba’s Big Band

Jackson Cage – Bruce Springsteen

Fast Forward (Serendipity soundtrack) – Alan Silvestri

Jungleland – Bruce Springsteen

I’m so Bored with The U.S.A – The Clash

Bhindi Bhagee (live) – Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros

Kitty’s Back (live at The Main Point 1973) – Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band

We Take Care of Our Own – Bruce Springsteen

Please Call Me Baby – Southside Johnny & LaBamba’s Big Band

You Do Something to Me – The Kinks

Changing Man – Paul Weller

Knockin‘ On Heavens Door – Bob Dylan

No Surrender – Bruce Springsteen

I was pretty unimpressed with the selection. Pretty much nothing I hadn’t listened to in the last couple of months. Except maybe The Kinks and Bob Dylan. Only one that put a real smile on my face was Jungleland. Never fails to make me feel fantastic.

Solo Elvis Costello

Kew Gardens, 16.07

Just came down with a throat infection the day before so I knew I shouldn’t go but I’m not one to waste money. Or a gig. Plus it was only around the corner really.

Very middle class gig. Lots of picnic tables and champagne and hampers. Went with my mum and we arrived pretty late so had to get some people to move up a bit so we could sit down but ended up with a fairly good spot about halfway back I think. And when we stood up had a pretty good view of the stage.

Missed the first support band but saw The McManus Brothers who sounded pretty good. Made up of two of Costello’s half brothers.

Really wanted to see this gig as it was solo and I thought it would be interesting to see. Really enjoyed it. Well as much as I could while feeling like absolute crap. Although obviously Kew Gardens is probably not the ideal venue to see Elvis Costello doing an intimate solo show but I’ll take what I can get.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes

W/ Gary U.S. Bonds at Shepherds Bush Empire, 11.07

I was actually supposed to have company for this gig but I got cancelled on at the last minute (serves me right for inviting someone) so I was trying my best not to be in a foul mood going in. My bus took ages and when I finally got there the support band sucked so that didn’t cheer me up. Well I shouldn’t say they sucked, they were talented musicians and singers but their music wasn’t very inspiring, bit generic, nothing special.

Gary U.S. Bonds came on after with most of the Jukes and two female singers. Saw him a few years ago in Plymouth with Bill Wyman. His voice is still in pretty good shape. He’s a real entertainer.

Bonds and his ladies finished and Southside and the Jukes came back on. They were pretty great. Pulled me right out of my funk. They always do. The place seemed pretty packed and they got a fantastic reception. I think they would of carried on playing if it weren’t for the 11pm curfew, but even though we were all enjoying ourselves he quite rightly  said “I aint gettin’ fined for you people!”

Chris and Glenn #1

Exeter Phoenix, 09.07

My Love for Squeeze is probably on par with my Love for Bruce. So that is saying something.

This was a rehearsal show for their upcoming ‘At Odds’ tour in November.

Lovely little show. Really nice to see just the two of them. I think the format needs a bit of tweaking though. Something didn’t quite flow. But they are both great and I can wait to see them again in November.

Edwyn Collins

Queen Elizabeth Hall, 17.06

Another venue I’ve not been to before. Good seats near the front and pretty comfortable.

Really lovely gig. Still not that familiar with his stuff besides Girl Like You and Rip It Up. But I like what I heard. Very life affirming and a testament to what the human body can deal with.

Paul Cook from The Sex Pistols was drumming with the band, that was pretty cool too.

Graham Parker & The Rumour

Shepherds Bush Empire, 06.06

Missed them last year, once I’d decided to go they’d sold out. Was again undecided about going to see them this year but saw that Glenn Tilbrook was supporting them so that swung it for me.

Glenn was fantastic as always. Really cool to see him on his own in that size venue. He got a great reception too.

Listened to a bit of GP & The Rumour before going and they sounded pretty good to me. Liked the horns on the earlier stuff. Sounded like a British version of the Asbury Jukes. They started out with some of their newer stuff which didn’t do much for me but I enjoyed the second half of the gig more with the older stuff.

Besides GP himself not the most rock and roll looking bands, just a bunch of old guys really!

Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott

Shepherds Bush Empire, 27.05

I’d been waiting about 18 months to see Paul Heaton again after seeing him support Squeeze in 2012. I’d been enjoying his last solo album, Acid Country, as well as listening to a bit of The Beautiful South best of and The Housemartins best of to keep me going while I waited.

I Love Shepherds Bush Empire, I think it’s possibly my favourite London venue. I’ve not had a very good time lately so the joy I got from just being in that venue. I was already on cloud 9 before any music even started.

Support from Cherry Ghost. I think I’ve heard them on the radio a bit. I enjoyed them, I’ll have to have a listen to see if I will still enjoy them or whether it was just my euphoria from the evening talking.

Paul and Jacqui were fantastic. Obviously.

I love his voice. The joy I got from that gig, it’s difficult to put into words. I was just so happy to be there.

2014 so far…

Quick summary of 2014 in gigs so far.

Nine Below Zero at The Half Moon, Putney. 24.01

Great gig. First time I’ve seen them properly. Saw them in Islington in 2012 but I was pretty ill so don’t actually remember much of it! Cool venue, never been there before. Great, great gig. So much talent and energy. Love Brian’s red suit.

The James Hunter Six at Ronnie Scotts. x2 12/15. 03

Me and my mate Jason had wanted to go to Ronnie Scotts for ages. Now I’ve been I don’t really feel the need to go again. The crowd is a very mixed bag. And with the waiters coming and going throughout the show it’s quite distracting. Band were fantastic as always, even with a very talkative audience on the Friday night.

Edwyn Collins at Rough Trade West. 19.04

Part of Record Store Day I went to see Edwyn Collins perform outside Rough Trade in Notting Hill. A lovely performance. Seems like an interesting and funny man.

Glenn Tilbrook at St Bartholomew’s church, Newton Abbot. 24.04

Lovely. Lovely venue, lovely gig.

Nick Lowe at Union Chapel. 09.05

Very interesting venue. The soothing tones of Nick Lowe were exactly what I needed. I need to start exploring his back catalogue. John Paul Jones came out and played bass and mandolin. And later Geraint Watkins joined them. Did Only A Rose which I love. He did I’m A Mess which speaks to me at the moment!

Nine Below Zero at 100 Club. 15.05

Always great. And at the 100 Club too.  Cant wait to see them on their 35th anniversary tour in November.

The James Hunter Six at 100 Club. 23.05

Always great. Finally felt I was back in the gig-going swing of things with this one. Love the venue too. And James was wearing some very nice shoes.

2013 in Gigs.

Brief summary of 2013…

Bobby Long and Joe Summers at Camden Barfly – Went to see my buddy Joe who I shared a house with during the first year of Uni. Hadn’t seen him for a couple of years and it was great to see him and to see the improvement in his playing and performance. Hadn’t heard of Bobby Long before but he was a pleasant surprise also. See it.

Richard Hawley at Troxy – Probably one of my top gigs of 2013 (how many times will I say that in this post?). Absolutely amazing and atmospheric. His voice just soothes me. Support by The Crookes who I like the sound of but haven’t looked up yet. Although we have a couple of their songs on the soundtrack at work.

Geraint Watkins w/Andy Fairweather Low at Dingwalls – Remembered this guy from seeing Bill Wyman a few years ago back at home in Plymouth.  See it.

James Hunter Six at Islington Assembly Hall – Love these guys. Cant get enough. Not a massive fan of the venue though.

New Street Adventure at the Boderline – Smooth, Curtis Mayfield/Bobby Womack influenced. See it.

NSA

Paul Weller at Rough Trade – Said it all here really.

BUboZr1CYAACFwq.jpg-large

Willie Nile at the 100 Club – Slightly disappointed with this one. Heard good things in the past but didn’t think he was anything that special. Glen Matlock guested on a couple of songs which was cool.

John Cooper Clarke at the Palladium – Only really knew JCC from the GCSE English anthology at school. Was an interesting evening of poetry, comedy and music.

Elvis Costello x2 at the Royal Albert Hall – Saw him for the first time last year and he was back again with the spectacular spinning songbook. Always forget how large his back catalogue is and how much I have yet to listen to. Loved the slow starting Oliver’s Army and realising how strong his voice in particularly on Shipbuilding and She.

James Hunter Six at the 100 Club – Love these guys. Cant get enough. Now this kinda venue is more like it. Hot and sweaty at the 100 Club. Managed to sweat out the cold I was suffering with at the time though.

Bruce Springsteen at Wembley – First Bruce of the year. Embarrassingly I’d forgotten how good they are. Darkness on The Edge of Town from start to finish.

The Strypes at Islington O2 – Very talented and very young. Not that that’s a bad thing. Didn’t blow me away as the hype had suggested but I’d give them another go.

Paul Weller at Brighton Pavillion – It’s Weller innit. Restricted view seats had a speaker stack in the way of the keyboard player. One more seat over and we wouldn’t have seen a thing so we got lucky. Also sat right above where the band came on stage. He does a funny little skip thing as he runs on stage. Fun to watch all the mods and mod fashion in Brighton too.

Bruce at Hard Rock Calling – Incredibly hot day eventually worth it in the end. And we got Born in The U.S.A all the way through. Very cool even if it was kind of expected.

Untitled-1

Love Supreme Festival – Bryan Ferry, Chic, Michael Kiwanuka, Charles Bradley, Jools Holland, Brand New Heavies, Eric Bibb and others I’m sure. Volunteered through Festaff to work at the festival in exchange for free entry. It was some of the easiest work I’ve ever done in glorious weather in the Sussex countryside. Jools Holland was entertaining (saw my new friend Chris Difford watching from the side of the stage), Charles Bradley was exciting, Brand New Heavies were boring, Chic were fun and Bryan Ferry was cool (and still incredibly handsome). I’d definitely recommend working with Festaff, they were very nice and relaxed and provided us with food during our shifts as well. This was quite a small, very middle class festival so I’m not sure what it’d be like doing something like V or Reading or Glastonbury.

Love Supreme

Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe at Hyde Park – Got a ticket for a tenner after Elton John pulled out of the gig. Only wanted to see those three anyway.

Bruce at Cardiff Millennium Stadium – Last Bruce of the year. Eric Burdon came out to do We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Pretty cool to see Bruce play with one of his heroes. There’s always the slight concern that each gig I see could be the last with the E Street Band but in Cardiff he was like a man possessed. There is no way he’s going anywhere anytime soon. Bring on a tour in 2014. See it.

Bruce Cardiff

Wilko Johnson at Koko – Missed out on his first round of “Farewell” gigs so managed to get tickets to this one at Koko at the last-minute. Phenomenal. Very glad I went. Felt a little bittersweet on the way home having just discovered this incredible live experience that wont be around for much longer.

Wilko

Paul Weller at Hammersmith Apollo – Went for the mothers birthday. Seats much further back than last time. A different atmosphere as well, a bit more celebratory or something. I’m not really sure.  Still great.

Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham at the 12 Bar Club – An evening of acoustic blues. Two incredibly talented musicians that were fantastic to watch. It was nice to see such obvious affection between the two of them and that they clearly still appreciate each other as musicians and friends. See it. Got roped into playing some sort of percussion instrument at the end of the first set when I wasn’t clapping along at one point.

James Hunter Six at Bluesfest 2013 – Love these guys. Cant get enough. Interesting event at the Royal Albert Hall, I believe for the last few years the Bluesfest was held across different venues but this year it was all held in various rooms around the building. Seemed to be some technical issues while they were setting up that they didn’t seem to be getting much help with so I got the impression that Mr Hunter wasn’t a very happy bunny. But once they started playing they were fantastic as usual.

Bryan Ferry

Bryan Ferry x2 at Plymouth Pavillions and Shepherds Bush Empire – Was intrigued after seeing him at the Love Supreme festival in the summer so my mum and I went to see him when I was at home in Plymouth for a weekend. A great entertainer and performer. And he still looks great doing it. What a stylish fella, eh? Enjoyed it enough to catch him again in Shepherds Bush a couple of weeks later.

Glen Matlock at Surya – Little venue and little crowd. Wasn’t sure about going as I wasn’t too familiar with his music after the Sex Pistols and I’m not that familiar with the Pistols either. Pleasantly surprised though.

Glenn Tilbrook at Blackheath Concert Hall – Fantastic. Wonderful. Lovely. It was just him which was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting him to have a keyboard player and drummer. I think I preferred him on his own. Played mostly acoustic guitar then did a few songs on the electric as well. I wish GT would teach me guitar.

Glenn Tilbrook

Suggs: My Life Story in Words and Music at The Garrick Theatre – An interesting, personable, charming and entertaining chap. Had terrible seats though so might try and see it again this year if I can.

Nick Lowe at Rough Trade – Last gig of the year. Lovely way to end the year seeing NL doing an in store appearance at Rough Trade promoting his new christmas album.
